Suraiya - A tribute


Tribute to Suraiya on her death anniversary today. Born as Suraiya Jamaal Sheikh (15 June 1929 – 31 January 2004) was a film playback singer and actress in Bollywood in the 1940s and 1950s. She was one of the most popular actresses and singers of the Indian sub-continent of her generation.
She was the only child of her parents. She was not formally trained in music; yet she went on to become a most successful singing film actress. She first sang for a children's program for AIR All India Radio or (Akashvani) in 1937.

SAMAY BADA BALWAN


Helen, K.N.Singh and Sohrab Modi on the sets of the movie 'Samay Bada Balwan'.

Samay Bada Balwan is a 1969 Hindi film produced and directed by Sohrab Modi. It starred Sohrab Modi, Mehtab, Aruna IRani, Sailesh Kumar, Shahida, K.N.Singh, Helen, David, Monto etc.Modi had sold his studio a year earlier but tried to revive the Minerva Movietone banner by producing this film.

The music director was Usha Khanna with lyrics written by D. N. Madhok. The notable songs were "Teri Tasveer Se Aankhen Meri Kyun Hatati Nahin" sung by Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle, and "Bhoole Afsane Phir Se Yaad Aaye" sung by Mohammed Rafi.

Payal wali Dekhna



Watch Jamuna dance while Kishore Kumar sings "Payal wali Dekhna". Song was composed by Chitragupta to the lyric of Majrooh Sultanpuri. Kishore Kumar was known more for his pop songs. But he did sing a few classical songs such as this and 'Mere Nayna Sawan Bhado' in Mehbooba.

OP Nayyar - A tribute - Pencil sketch


Here is my pencil sketch of the legendary composer OP Nayyar drawn today. Today is the death anniversary of this great composer.

Here is an extract of an article appeared in The Hindu on 29th January, 2007 

Described by his contemporaries as a powerhouse of talent, Nayyar enthralled generations of Indians with his lilting romantic numbers featuring a distinctive sound created by the innovative use of the piano, saxophone and rhythms.

The creator of evergreen numbers such as "Chain Se Humko Kabhi Apne," "Tumsa Nahin Dekha" and "Aap Yuhin Agar Hamse Milte Rahen," Nayyar faded from the music scene in the 1970s before his death on Sunday.

Though he did not have a classical background, he overtook many of his contemporaries such as S.D. Burman and Madan Mohan in popularity. And his songs continue to be heard even today, garnering new fans with their unique sound, especially the rhythms that mimicked the clippety-clop of horses.

Nayyar can be credited with advancing the careers of many playback singers in Bollywood such as Geeta Dutt, Asha Bhonsle and Mohammed Rafi, but he never worked with Lata Mangeshkar.

Born on January 26, 1926 in Lahore, Omkar Prasad Nayyar began his career in films with the background score for Kaneez in 1949. His first big success was Guru Dutt's Aar Paar, which led to a successful partnership with the director of classic films such as Mr And Mrs 55 and CID. He gained distinction for his efforts in Mere Sanam, which featured the evergreen compositions "Jaiyee Aap Kahan Jaayenge" and "Pukarta Chala Hoon Main."
Attired in his trademark white and wearing a hat, Nayyar attempted a comeback in the early 1990s withAndaz Apna Apna.

The creator of all-time hits such as "Mera Nam Chin Chin Choo," "Aei Dil Hai Muskil Jeena Yahan," "Aakhon Hi Akhon Main," "Kahin Pe Nigahen Kahin Pe Nishana," "Jaane Kahan Mera Jigar Gaya Jee" and "Babuji Dhire Chalna" was recently seen in the musical TV show "Sa Re Ga Ma." Though he spent most of his career composing music for films made in north India, he also did the score for south Indian movies such as Neerajanam (Telugu).

Ramesh Sippy - Happy Birthday (23rd January)



Happy Birthday to Ramesh Sippy who has directed 'Sholay', the most remarkable and evergreen film of India.
Ramesh Sippy (Sindhiرمیش سپی‎) (born 23 January 1947) is an Indian film director, best known for directing the popular and critically acclaimed film Sholay. He is a winner of the civilian honour of Padma Shri in 2013.
Sippy's father was producer G. P. Sippy. His son Rohan Sippy is a film director. His daughter Sheena is married to Shashi Kapoor's son, Kunal Kapoor. Ramesh Sippy has been married twice; his current wife is actress Kiran Juneja.
Ramesh Sippy visited the sets of the film Sazaa, his father's first film, when he was 6 years old. His first film job came at age nine, when he played Achala Sachdev's son in the 1953 film Shahenshah. He worked in both the production and direction departments in films like Johar-Mehmood in Goa and Mere Sanam, which his father was producing. He worked for 7 years as an assistant before becoming the director of Andaz, in 1971. Although this was only a moderate success, his second film Seeta Aur Geeta (1972) was highly successful.
In 1975 he directed Sholay which went on to become the biggest blockbuster in Bollywood film history and won major acclaim. Sholay still remains one of the biggest blockbuster films in Hindi film history and remains one of the favourites for Hindi film audiences globally. While Sholay was a tribute to the Westerns, his next film Shaan in 1980 was inspired by the James Bond films. In 1982 he brought together veteran actor Dilip Kumar and the reigning superstar of the time Amitabh Bachchan in Shakti. While the film was only moderately successful, it won the Filmfare Best Movie Award. In 1985 he directed Saagar which was considered a comeback film for Dimple Kapadia.
He directed a successful television serial titled Buniyaad which focused on the Partition of India and aired on Indian television channel Doordarshan in 1987. The last three films he directed, Bhrashtachar (1989), Akayla (1991), and Zamana Deewana (1995) were box office flops and he has since not directed any film, as of 2015.
His string of hits with Amitabh Bachchan made him one of the golden directors who had a special working relationship with the actor (Yash ChopraPrakash MehraManmohan Desai, and Hrishikesh Mukherjee being the other four). In 2005 he received the Filmfare Best Film of 50 Years award for his legendary film, Sholay.
He has produced films directed by his son Rohan Sippy, such as Kuch Naa Kaho (2003), Bluffmaster (2005) and Dum Maro Dum (2011). In 2006 he produced Taxi No. 9211which was directed by Milan Luthria. In 2008 he produced Kunaal Roy Kapur's The President is Coming as well as the Akshay Kumar-Deepika Padukone film, Chandni Chowk to China, directed by Nikhil Advani. In 1989 Ramesh Sippy and his wife Kiran visited Karachi,Pakistan and stayed for a few days.

Sumankalyanpur - Happy Birthday



Birthday greetings to Suman Kalyanpur, a very popular singer. She is one of the best-known and most respected playback singers in India. Her greatness is such that her voice was often mistaken to be that of Lata Mangeshkar. Her career started in 1954 and was very popular singer in the decade of 60s and 70s. She recorded songs for movies in several languages besides Hindi, Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Rajasthani, Bengali, Oriya and Punjabi. She was bit unfortunate as she never won the National Film Awards or Filmfare Award for singing but is still considered among the very popular singers of India.
Listen to this wonderful song sung by her for Meena Kumari in the film 'Dil Ek Mandir'. The song was written by Sahilendra and composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

He portrayed many a role in films with such perfection that none can equal him in the roles as Krishna, Rama, Sri Krishnadevaraya, Raavan, Duryodhan, etc. I pay my tribute to this legend through a pencil sketch of him in the role of Brahmanaidu from the historical film 'Palnati Yudhdham' in Telugu.

ఏళ్ల పర్యంతంగా రకరకాల చీకట్లలో మ్రగ్గిన హృదయ నావలోకి ఏ ఒక్క కాంతి కిరణం చొరబడినా ఒక పండగే అనిపిస్తుంది. అలాంటిది కోటి దివ్వెల కాంతితో తనరారుతూ తన హృదయ వేదికమీద కదలాడిన ప్రేమను చూస్తే ఏం చేస్తారు? ఆ ప్రేమనొక అఖండ జ్యోతిగా జీవన లోగిలిలో దేదీప్యమానంగా వెలిగించుకుంటారు. ఆ లోగిలినే కాదు మొత్తం భవనాన్నే అనంతమైన ఆశా పుష్పాలతో అలంకరించుకుంటారు. కానీ, అప్పటిదాకా తనవారే అనిపించిన వ్యక్తే తన లోకాన్ని ధ్వంసం చేసేస్తే ఇంకేముంది? కళ్లముందే అంతా కకావికలమై, జీవన వ్యవస్థ అంతా తునాతునకలైపోతుంది. ఆ శిధిలాల కిందినుంచి లేవడం ఇక ఎప్పటికీ సాధ్యం కాదనిపించినప్పుడు ఇంక జీవించడంలో ఏ అర్థమూ లేదనిపిస్తుంది.

తాము నడిచి వెళ్లే దారిలో ఎన్నెన్ని బాధలు ఉంటాయో ఎలప్రాయంలో ఎవరికీ ఏమీ తెలియదు. అందుకే ప్రతి విఘాతానికీ హృదయం విలవిల్లాడుతుంది. ఆశలన్నీ కన్నీటిమయం అవుతున్నప్పుడు, ఆకాంక్షలన్నీ నిట్టూర్పుల మయం అవుతున్నప్పుడు జీవితం శోక సముద్రమే అవుతుంది. ఇతరమైన ఐశ్వర్యాలూ, ఆనందాలూ ఎన్ని పోయినా, కనీసం స్నేహితులైనా కడదాకా మనతో ఉండిపోవాలని కోరుకుంటాం.. కానీ, ఆ స్నేహితులు కూడా దూరమైపోతే, జీవించడంలో అర్థమేం కనిపిస్తుంది. కాకపోతే ఒక చోట హృదయం ముకుళించుకుపోతే మరోచోట అది వికసిస్తుంది. ఒక చోట ప్రాణరహితంగా కనిపించే హృదయమే ఒకచోట అనంతమమైన చైతన్యంతో తొణకిసలాడుతుంది. ఈ నిజాన్నే మనం తరుచూ విస్మరిస్తూ ఉంటాం. అడుగడుగునా అంతులేని నైరాశ్యానికి లోనవుతాం. నిజానికి అన్నీ తెలిసిన ఆత్మ ఘటనాఘటనాలకు అతీతంగా సాగిపోతూనే ఉంటుంది. సుఖదుఃఖాలకు అతీతంగా జీవనయానాన్ని 

కొనసాగిస్తూనే ఉంటుంది.

OP Nayyar - Biography

Please watch this video on  OP Nayyar the legendary music director on his birth anniversary on 16th January.

Incidentally OP saab is my most favourite music director. When asked who was his favourite music director, Rafi saab is said to have commented : "Yoon to hamne lakh music director dekhen hai, OP Nayyar saab jaise nahin dekha". That is the greatness of OP Nayyar who never compromised on what he believed. He was the only music director who did not compose any song with the singing maharani of India Lata Mangeshkar.

Chitragupta - The composer - A tribute


Chitragupta Shrivastava (16 November 1917 – 14 January 1991), better known as Chitragupta, was an Indian film music director of the 1950s and 1960s in Hindi cinema. Unfortunately he did not get the praise and acclaim he deserved. Who can forget his composition of the heart touching song 'Chal udja re panchi' from the film Bhabhi? He was born in Sawreji, a village located in Saran district in the Indian state of Bihar (now in Gopalganj district). His sons Anand-Milind are also noted Bollywood music directors. They worked as assistant music directors with their father for eight years.

Shoban Babu - A tribute on his birth anniversary


Shoban Babu  (January 14, 1937 – March 20, 2008) was an Indian film actor in Telugu cinema. He made his film debut with Daivabalam, directed by Vasanthkumar Reddy, but Bhakta Shabari was released earlier. In a career spanning two decades, he played versatile roles in various genre. He has garnered five Andhra Pradesh state Nandi Awards and four Filmfare Best Actor Award (Telugu). He received the Rashtrapati Award for his performance in the 1969 film Bangaru Panjaram.[

Mahendra Kapoor - A tribute


Tribute to Mahendra Kapoor, a great playback singer, on his birth anniversary today. He was an ardent fan of Md. Rafi. In a career spanning five decades, his repertoire extended to 2500 songs in various regional languages, including popular songs such as 'Chalo ek baar phir se Ajnabi ban jayen hum dono' (Gumrah), and 'Neele gagan ke tale' (Hamraaz). His name however became most closely associated with patriotic songs including 'Mere Desh Ki Dharti' in Manoj Kumar's film Upkaar. In 1972, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India. He is perhaps most notable for lending his voice to actor Manoj Kumar in most of his film, mainly in patriotic genre of music.Mahendra ji's lent his voice to actor/director Manoj Kumar.

Today is the birth anniversary of Mahendra Kapur, the great singer. Composer OP Nayyar always preferred Rafi saab. But when differenes cropped up between the two, OP saab had to look for other singers. Thus emerged this beautiful song sung by Mahendra Kapur for the heart touching film 'Sambandh'. MASAAN - the movie


I had a chance watching the movie MASAAN. To make a movie with the backdrop of burning ghats (smashan) in Varanasi is a very bold attempt. The advent of mobile phones, internet, facebook, youtube, etc. has been delicately used in weaving the story. The makers of the movie, the cast deserve all credit for making the movie a memorable one. It announces the arrival of new talents in its writer and director: Grover’s story is eminently worth telling, and Ghaywan tells it beautifully.

Actress Nanda - Tribute


Tribute to Nanda on her birth anniversary today. She was low profile compared to other leading actresses of her times such as Nutan, Meena Kumari etc. but no less iconic in stature for that. Sashi Kapoor and Nanda were considered a hit pair those days. They appeared in eight films and almost all of them are hits.

Jaidev - Music composer - My tribute on his death anniversary (6th January)


I like the compositions of Jaidev. He gave super hit songs but did not receive the recognition he deserved. Here is an excerpt from an article entitle 'Sounds of silence' courtesy the Hindu 'Businessline' newspaper.

Three national awards and numerous evergreen songs were not enough to save composer Jaidev from rejection by the Hindi film industry
Success, it is said and believed, is a lonely road. Failure lonelier. Underachievement is probably the loneliest of all.

Jaidev’s life story reads much like the script of a black-and-white film that tells of a melancholic protagonist, either pining for his love or battling terminal illness or poverty. In a field where success is measured by commerce, and only commerce, Jaidev’s creativity found few takers. His life was not one of penury. But one that lacked appreciation from the very people he worked with yes.
In an interview with Ameen Sayani, the grand old man of radio, Jaidev explained that he didn’t marry in order to have a proper work-life balance. What he carefully avoided was that he was probably unsure of his capability to sustain a family with the transient nature of success he achieved in his career. 'When he died in 1987, at the age og 68, his body was brought straight to the crematorium from the hospital. Like a destitute’s.
Jaidev’s path to the music industry was chequered. He debuted in films as a child actor, an attempt which did not add value to his career. His training in music was continuous though, culminating in a stint under sarod maestro Ali Akbar Khan. Jaidev assisted Khan in Navketan’s third film, Aandhiyaan (1952). He played the sarod and the surmandal (harp), especially for background scores. When director Chetan Anand left Navketan to go solo with Joru Ka Bhai (1955), Jaidev was his choice for composer. However, Chetan’s films, in spite of brilliant music, especially in the inordinately delayed Kinare Kinare (1963), fared miserably. It is not known whether Jaidev’s decision to assist SD Burman went against him, asHum Dono (1961), the only project he did independently for Navketan, remained his last film with the Anands — both Chetan and Dev. This despite the undying popularity of the songs from the Dev Anand-Nanda-Sadhna starrer — Abhi na jao chhod kar, ke dil abhi bhara nahin is just one example. His partnership with Sunil Dutt and Ajanta Arts, which started off on a positive note with Mujhe Jeene Do(1963), failed to survive the winds of change as Reshma aur Shera (1971) flopped.
Luck, as always, had a decisive and rather cruel part to play in Jaidev’s story. Ved Rahi’s Pyaasi Aurat, renamed Prem Parvat (1973), which had one of the most well-known songs of the ’70s (Yeh dil aur unki nigahon ke saaye) sank without a trace. So did Aalingan (1974), which had the radio favourite Pyaas thi phir bhi takaza na kiya, a film where he was forced to take on Pyarelal as an assistant. Even small-time producers and directors stayed away from Jaidev.
Though he came back to prominence with Bhim Sain’s Gharonda (1977) and Muzzaffar Ali’s Gaman(1978), Jaidev’s associations with Hrishikesh Mukherjee (Alaap, 1977) or Basu Chatterjee (Tumhare Liye, 1978) did not bring him much success. He never became the preferred composer for any filmmaker, good or bad, even when the misfortune of films hardly had anything to do with the music. He was the only Hindi film composer of his time to receive three national awards. Curious as it may be, the same is the number of his films which were declared a hit, from a list of 40-odd titles.
Today, the songs for which Jaidev is remembered are steeped in loneliness. Be it Ek akela is sheher mein(Gharonda), or Seene mein jalan, aankhon mein toofan sa kyon hai or Aap ki yaad aati rahi raat bhar(both from Gaman). Maybe his life followed the dichotomy expressed by Sahir Ludhianvi in Kabhi khud pe kabhi halaat pe rona aaya (Hum Dono). Jaidev lived and died on the fringes of Bollywood, much like his own composition from Kinare KinareChale ja rahe hain, mohabbat ke maare, kinare kinare, chale ja rahe hain.

Chetan Anand - Producer, Director - A tribute



Chetan Anand (3 January 1921 – 6 July 1997) was a Hindi film producer, screenwriter and director from India, whose debut film,Neecha Nagar, was awarded the Palme d'Or (Best Film) award at the first ever Cannes Film Festival in 1946. It was the debut film for Kamini Kaushal and became the first Indian film to gain international recognition[7] and was the debut of Pandit Ravi Shankar.[8] Later he co-foundedNavketan Films with his younger brother Dev Anand in 1949.[2]
He was the eldest brother of the Anand family as he was the elder brother to Hindi film actor-directors, Dev Anand and Vijay Anand
By the early 1950s, he and his younger brother Dev Anand had set up Navketan Productions in Mumbai. Afsar, starring Dev Anand and Suraiya, was the first film made by Navketan, which turned out to be a moderate success. It was followed by Taxi Driver and Andhiyan, both of which he directed for the Navketan banner.
While he made his reputation as a director, Chetan Anand kept on acting too occasionally. He appeared in Humsafar made in 1957. In 1957 he directed two movies Arpan andAnjali, in which he played lead roles too. He went on to act in Kala BazarKinare-KinareAmanKanch Aur Heera and Hindustan Ki Kasam, which he directed too.[9]
Later on Chetan Anand started his own production banner called Himalaya films and teamed up with photographer Jal Mistry, music director Madan Mohan, lyrics writer Kaifi Azmi and actress Priya Rajvansh. Together they gave some of most memorable and unique films in Hindi cinema like HaqeeqatHeer RaanjhaHanste Zakhm, and Hindustan Ki Kasam.
Anand is known to be the film-maker who 'discovered' Rajesh Khanna from an acting competition. Khanna as a result got his first break and was cast by Anand in the film Aakhri Khat, although G.P.Sippy's 'Raaz' introducing Rajesh Khanna and Babita was the first 'released' film for Rajesh Khanna. Aakhari Khat is known for its beautiful locations, songs penned by Kaifi Aazmi, composed by Khayyam, the beautiful lady Indrani Mukherjee and the child star 'Bunty'. Actually Bunty and the music were the main attractions of this film. Chetan Anand later directed Rajesh Khanna in the film Kudrat, based on the theme of reincarnation, which helped the latter arrest a slide in popularity, allowing Rajesh Khanna make a temporary comeback with this hit film.
Apart from 17 feature films he is also known for the acclaimed television serial, Param Vir Chakra, which was aired Doordarshan in 1988. (Source: Wikipedia)
