My pencil work of Pandit Vijaya Raghava Rao on the eve of his death anniversary on Nov. 30. My tribute.
He was an Indian flutist, composer, choreographer, musicologist, poet, fiction writer, etc. He was awarded the Padma Sri by Govt. of India and the Sangeet Natak Akademy in Creative and Experimental music category. He composed music for numerous documentaries of Films Division.
Panditji’s creative works in the realms of dance, orchestral composition and film music are recognized for an energizing originality that is often perceived to extend the boundaries of the artistic idiom. His compositions in dance and music have set trends, recognized worldwide with awards, and permeated musical expression in cultural media such as film, ballet and recordings. Panditji’s scores for Mrinal Sen’s ‘Bhuvan Shome’, painter M.F. Hussain’s ‘Through the Eyes of a Painter’ and Mrinal Sen’sl ‘Oka Oori Kadha’ in Telugu are a few examples of such brilliance. He worked as a music coordinator/musician for Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’. As a poet, Panditji has published five well- received anthologies of poems and short stories in English and Telugu.

Jaidev - Composer

Jaidev (3 August 1919 – 6 January 1987; born Jaidev Verma) was a music composer in Hindi films, most known for his work in films: Hum Dono (1961), Reshma Aur Shera (1972), Prem Parbat (1973) and Gharonda (1977).
He won the National Film Award for Best Music Direction, three times for Reshma Aur Shera (1972), Gaman (1979) and Ankahee (1985).[1]

aidev was born in Nairobi and brought up in Ludhiana, India. In 1933, when he was 15 years old, he ran away to Bombay to become a film star. There, he acted in eight films as a child star for the Wadia Film Company. He was initiated into music at a young age in Ludhiana by Prof. Barkat Rai. Later, when he made it Bombay, he learnt music from Krishnarao Jaokar and Janardan Jaokar.
Unfortunately, he had to leave his film career abruptly and return to Ludhiana, due to his father’s blindness, which thrust the sole responsibility of his family on his young shoulders.
After his father died, Jaidev took the responsibility of looking after his sister, Ved Kumari and later got her married to Sat-Paul Varma. After that in 1943, he left for Lucknow to study under the tutelage of music maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.

Jaidev was the first music director to bag 3 National Award. Ali Akbar Khan took Jaidev as his music assistant, in 1951, when he composed music for Navketan Films's Aandhiyan (1952) and 'Hum Safar'. From film 'Taxi Driver' on, he became assistant to music composer, S. D. Burman.
His big break as a full-fledged music director came with Chetan Anand's film, Joru Ka Bhai, followed by Chetan Anand's next Anjali, both of these films became very popular.
Though it was with the film Navketan's Hum Dono (1961) that Jaidev true came into the limelight, with classic songs like, "Allah Tero Naam", 'Abhi Na Jao Chhodkar", "Main Zindagi Ka Saath" and "Kabhi khud pe Kabhi Halat pe". His other big success came with Sunil Dutt star, Mujhe Jeene Do (1963).
Though many of Jaidev's films failed at the box office, many of them, such as Alap, Kinare Kinare and Ankahee, are remembered for his imaginative musical scores. He had a unique capability to mix traditional and folk music into Hindi film situations, giving him a unique advantage to other music directors of his times.[2]
He also known for his non-film album of the couplets of Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan's classic work Madhushala set to music and sung by singer Manna Dey.
He is one of the favourite composers of Lata Mangeshkar besides Salil Chowdhury and Madan Mohan. He also composed music for Nepali film Maitighar .
Jaidev never married, though he remained close to his sister’s family, who later settled in the United Kingdom. He died on 6 January 1987, at the age of 68. His last work was for the television series Ramayan. (Source : Wikipedia)

KN Singh - Bollywood's Villan and character actor.

Krishan Niranjan, known as K. N. Singh in Indian cinema, was a  prominent villain and character actor, who appeared in over 200 Hindi films over a long career stretching from 1936 to the late 1980s.
K.N. Singh excelled in Javelin throw and Shot Put. He was selected to represent India in the 1936 Berlin Olympics before circumstances compelled him to go to Calcutta to attend on his ailing sister. There he met his family friend Prithviraj Kapoor, who introduced him to director Debaki Bose, who offered him a debut role in his film Sunehra Sansar (1936).
K.N. Singh enjoyed limited success until the release of Baghban (1938), in which he played the antagonist. Baghban was a golden jubilee hit, establishing Singh as one of the leading villains of the era.
Through the 1940s and 1950s, Singh appeared in several iconic movies of the era, including Sikandar (1941), Jwar Bhata (1944) (Dilip Kumar's film debut), Humayun (1945), Awara (1951), Jaal (1952), CID (1956), Howrah Bridge (1958), Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), Amrapali (1966) and An Evening in Paris (1967).
As opposed to playing angry mobsters, K.N. Singh mostly played a white collared gentleman villain, dressed in a fine suit and smoking a pipe, with a calm cold delivery. His suave style, baritone voice and menacing eyes became legendary. As an actor, Singh's thirst for learning was legendary. For example, he studied the style and mannerisms of carriage riders to prepare for the role of a horse carriage driver in Inspector (1956).
Singh played prominent roles in movies like Jhoota Kahin Ka (1970), Haathi Mere Saathi (1971) and Mere Jeevan Saathi (1972). His last prominent role was in the 1973 film Loafer. With advancing years, he became less active, particularly from the mid 1970s onwards. Many of his roles from the late 1970s onwards were mere cameo appearances, arranged with the sole purpose of ensuring that actors turned up on time- such was his stature that actors would never turn up late when he was in the sets. His last appearance was in Woh Din Aayega (1986).

Kishore Kumar, Sudha Malhotra - Kashti ka khamosh safar hai

Today is the birth anniversary of the great singer Kishore Kumar. Have you heard this song from 'Girl Friend', a duet with Sudha Malhotra, a forgotten singer? Lyrics : Sahir and music composed by Hemant Kumar. What a beautiful song it is .. ! Watch the video of this song.
Kashti ka khamosh safar hai
Shaam bhi hai tanhai bhi
Door kinare par bajti hai
Lehron ki shehnai bhi
Kashti ka khamosh safar hai
Shaam bhi hai tanhai bhi
Door kinare par bajti hai
Lehron ki shehnai bhi
Aaj mujhe kuchh kehna hai
Aaj mujhe kuchh kehna hai
Lekin yeh sharmeeli nigaahein
Mujhko ijazat dein to kahun
Khud meri betaab umangein
Thodi fursat dein to kahun
Aaj mujhe kuchh kehna hai
Aaj mujhe kuchh kehna hai
Jo kuchh tumko kehna hai
Woh mere hi dil ki baat na ho
Jo mere khwaabon ki manzil
Us manzil ki baat na ho
Kehte hue dar sa lagta hai
Keh kar baat na kho baithun
Yeh jo zara sa saath mila hai
Yeh bhi saath na kho baithun
Kab se tumhare raste pe main
Phool bichhaaye baithi hun
Keh bhi chuko jo kehna hai
Main aas lagaye baithi hun
Dil ne dil ki baat samajh li
Ab munh se kya kehna hai
Aaj nahin to kal keh lenge
Ab to saath hi rehna hai
Keh bhi chuko
Keh bhi chuko jo kehna hai
Chhodo ab kya kehna hai

Kanan Devi - 100th Birth Anniversary

100th B.A. of Kanan Devi (22 April 1916 – 17 July 1992) actress and singer. She was among the early singing stars of Indian cinema, and is credited popularly as the first star of Bengali cinema. Her singing style, usually in rapid tempo, was used instrumentally in some of the biggest hits of New Theatres, Kolkata. The films of New Theatres owned by Biren Sircar established her as a superhit singer and her films ran to packed audiences. She had to travel under constant protection given her huge fan following. During her years with New Theatres, Calcutta from 1937, she played the lead in Barua's Mukti (1937), which was perhaps her finest performance, making her the studio's top star. Apart from Mukti, she did Vidyapati, Saathi (1938), Street Singer (1938), Sapera (1939), Jawani Ki Reet (1939), Parajay (1939), Abhinetri (1940), Lagan (1941), Parichay (1941) and Jawab (1942).Kanan Devi's last Hindi film was Chandrashekhar (1948) with Ashok Kumar.Kanan married Ashok Maitra in December 1940. He was the son of the staunch Brahmo Samaj educationist Heramba Chandra Maitra. Despite their best intentions, the marriage could not withstand the severe condemnation by the then conservative society. Even the poet Rabindra Nath Tagore who sent a token gift to the married couple received scathing criticism for blessing the couple. The main issue was Kanan was not expected to be working in films after her marriage. She filed for divorce in 1945. Despite the pain of the divorce, Kanan expressed her immense gratitude towards her first husband for giving her social recognition through marriage for the first time in her life. To Kanan's credit she maintained excellent relations with Rani Mahanalobis, sister to Ashok Maitra and her husband the famous social scientist P.C. Mahanalobis and with Kusumkumari Devi, Ashok Maitra's mother, even after the marriage was severed.Kanan married Haridas Bhattacharjee around 1949. Haridas Bhattacharjee was then ADC to the Governor of Bengal. He eventually left the naval service to join Kanan in her filmmaking venture and became a competent director.Kanan Devi, as the first lady of the Bengali screen, received many honours for her contribution to Indian cinema. An honorary degree from Vishwabharati, the Padma Shree in 1968 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1976.

Kamli - Telugu movie

Recently I watched the 2006 Telugu movie 'Kamli'. I liked the movie very much especially for its story telling and its excellent climax.
The film is directed by K.N.T. Sastry. Nandita Das was in the titile role of a Lambada girl. The film was showcased at the Busan International Film Festival in Korea and the Asian Film Festival in Mumbai.
Awards:

Wikipedia writes : Kamli was actually inspired by a K.N.T. Sastry's award winning documentary harvesting babies. K.N.T. Sastry wanted to make a feature film based on the documentary about the plight of tribal women selling their babies for a pittance. He actually contacted and wanted to make film with Soundarya as the main female lead of Kamli, but she died in a helicopter crash, and finally made the film with Nandita Das.

Suchitra Sen - Pencil drawing - A tribute

My pencil sketch of one of the greatest actresses of India, Suchitra Sen, on her birth anniversary today. Here is a brief summary on Suchitra Sen (Cooutesy : Wikipedia)

Suchitra Sen (Bengaliসুচিত্রা সেন) (Bengali pronunciation: [ʃuːtʃiːraː ʃeːn] About this sound listen ), (born as Roma Dasgupta) (About this sound listen ; 6 April 1931 – 17 January 2014), was an Indian film actress who worked in Bengali and Hindi cinema. The movies in which she was paired opposite Uttam Kumar became classics in the history of Bengali cinema.[1]
Suchitra Sen was the first Bengali actress to receive an award at an international film festival when, at the 1963 Moscow International Film Festival, she won the Silver Prize for Best Actress for Saat Paake Bandha.[2][3] In 1972, she was awarded the Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian awards in India.[4] From 1979 on, she retreated from public life and shunned all forms of public contact; for this she is often compared to Greta Garbo.[5][6] In 2005, she refused the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest cinematic award in India, to stay out of the public eye.[7] In 2012, she was conferred the West Bengal Government's highest honour: Banga Bibhushan.[8]

I understand from one of the interiews Mun Mun Sen gave to media that Andhra Pradesh’s eminent producer D Ramanaidu once said to her : ‘Tell your mother I’ve a blank cheque waiting for your mother whenever she decides to work with me.’ - That was acting prowess of great Suchitra Sen.

Personal life and education[edit]

Suchitra Sen was born in Sen Bhanga Bari village of Belkuchi Upazila, now in Sirajgonj District, Greater Pabna in the present dayPabna District of Bangladesh, on 6 April 1931.[9][10] Her father Late Karunamoy Dasgupta was the headmaster of the local school, and her mother Late Indira Devi was a homemaker. She was their fifth child and third daughter. Ms Sen is a Grand Daughter of Famous Poet Sree Rajonikant Sen.[11] She received her formal education in Pabna. Partition brought her family and her to West Bengal,[12] where she married Dibanath Sen, son of wealthy industrialist Adinath Sen, in 1947,[13] and had one daughter, Moon Moon Sen, who is a former actress. Her father-in-law, Adinath Sen, was supportive of her acting career in films after her marriage.[14]Her industrialist husband invested a lot in her career initially and supported her in all possible ways.[15]
Sen had made a successful entry into Bengali films in 1952, and then a less successful transition into the Hindi movie industry. According to persistent but unconfirmed reports in the Bengali press, her marriage was strained by her success in the film industry .[16]

Career[edit]

Suchitra Sen made her debut in films with Shesh Kothaay in 1952, but it was never released.[17] The following year saw her act opposite Uttam Kumar in Sharey Chuattor, a film by Nirmal Dey. It was a box-office hit and is remembered for launching Uttam-Suchitra as a leading pair. They went on to become the icons for Bengali dramas for more than 20 years, becoming almost a genre unto themselves.[18] She has acted in 30 of her 60 films with Uttam Kumar. She received a Best Actress Award nomination for the filmDevdas (1955), which was her first Hindi movie. Her Bengali melodramas and romances, especially with Uttam Kumar, made her the most famous Bengali actress ever.[19] Her pairing with Bengal’s King of Hearts Uttam Kumar created classic romantic hits (AgniparikshaHarano SurSaptapadiPathey Holo Deri,Kamal LataIndraniSabar UporeSuryatoranShaare ChuattorSadanander MelaJiban TrishnaEkti RaatChaawa PaawaShapmochanBipashaNaboragTrijama,Rajlakshmi SrikantoHar Mana HarAlo Amar AloOra Thakey OdhareGrihaprabesh and others) that have enjoyed ageless popularity and are watched, loved and admired even to this day.
The skyrocketing popularity of this romantic pair created a benchmark that remains unchallenged to this day. No other romantic pair in Bengali cinema in the subsequent decades have been able to match up to the magic created by Suchitra Sen and Uttam Kumar.[20]
It must be mentioned here that much of the duo’s popularity was contributed by the songs that showed them together. The team of Hemanta Kumar MukhopadhyaySandhya MukhopadhyayGeeta Dutt was a very successful combination that brought melody and romance in the perfect tandem of melodrama that was portrayed in the Uttam Suchitra movies so effortlessly. Songs like Ei poth jodi na sesh hoye from SaptapadiTumi je amar from Harano Sur showcase their effortless chemistry with each other, immortalizing them in the hearts of their fans.[21]
Her films ran through the 1960s and '70s. She continued to act in films even after her husband died in 1970 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, such as in the Hindi film Aandhi (1974).Aandhi was inspired by India's Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.[22] Sen received a Filmfare Award nomination as Best Actress, while Sanjeev Kumar, who played the role of her husband, won the Filmfare as Best Actor.[23]
One of her best known performances was in Deep Jwele Jaai (1959). She played in a character name Radha Mitra, a hospital nurse employed by a progressive psychiatrist, Pahadi Sanyal, who is expected to develop a personal relationship with male patients as part of their therapy. Sanyal diagnoses the hero, Basanta Choudhury, as having an unresolved Oedipal dilemma. He orders Radha to play the role though she is hesitant as in a similar case she had fallen in love with the patient. She finally agrees and bears up to Choudhury's violence, impersonates his mother, sings his poetic compositions and in the process falls in love again. In the end, even as she brings about his cure, she suffers a nervous breakdown. The film is noted for its partly lit close-ups of Sen, which set the tone of the film.[24] Asit Sen remade the film in Hindi as Khamoshi (1969) with Waheeda Rehman in the Suchitra Sen role.[25]
Suchitra Sen's other landmark film with Asit Sen was Uttar Falguni (1963). She plays the dual role of a courtesan, Pannabai, and her daughter Suparna, a lawyer. Critics note that she brought a great deal of poise, grace and dignity to the role of a fallen woman determined to see her daughter grow up in a good, clean environment.[26][27][28]
Suchitra Sen's international success came in 1963, when she won the best actress award at the Moscow International Film Festival for the movie Saat Paake Bandha, becoming the first Indian actress to receive an international film award.[29]
There is a scene in Saat Paake Bandha where Suchitra Sen has to tear the vest that Soumitra is wearing. Later, at a party thrown to celebrate the film's success, she did a repeat of the scene and tore Soumitra's shirt, much to the amazement of those present. Something that no one but her, could have even imagined doing in that age![30]
A film critic summed up Suchitra Sen's career and continuing legacy as "one half of one of Indian cinema's most popular and abiding screen pairs, Suchitra Sen redefined stardom in a way that few actors have done, combining understated sensuality, feminine charm and emotive force and a no-nonsense gravitas to carve out a persona that has never been matched, let alone surpassed in Indian cinema"[31]

In retirement[edit]

Suchitra Sen refused Satyajit Ray's offer due to a scheduling problem. As a result, Ray never made the film Devi Chaudhurani based on the novel written by Rishi Bankim Chandra Chattopadhya. She also refused Raj Kapoor's offer for a film under the RK banner.[32]
Sen continued to act after her husband's death in 1970, but called it a day when Pronoy Pasha flopped,[33] and retired from the screen in 1978 after a career of over 25 years to a life of quiet seclusion. She was to do a film project Nati Binodini, also starring Rajesh Khanna,[34]but the film was shelved mid-way after shooting when she decided to quit acting.
She assiduously avoided the public gaze after her retirement and devoted her time to the Ramakrishna Mission.[9] Suchitra Sen was a contender for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2005, provided she was ready to accept it in person. Her refusal to go to New Delhi and personally accept it from the President of India deprived her of the award.[35]

Death[edit]

Suchitra Sen was admitted to the hospital on 24 December 2013 and was diagnosed with a lung infection. She was reported to have been recovering well in the first week of January.[36] She died at 8.25 am on 17 January 2014, due to a heart attack.[37][38]
Suchitra Sen's death was condoled by many leaders, including the President of India Dr. Pranab Mukherjee, the Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, and B.J.P.'s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.[39] A gun salute was given before her cremation, upon the orders of Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal.[40]
Respecting her fierce desire for complete privacy, her last rites were performed at Kolkata's Kaioratola crematorium, barely five and half hours after she died, with her coffin reaching the crematorium in a flower decked hearse with dark-tinted windows. Despite being Bengal's greatest star, referred to as "Mahanayika", she had consciously chosen to step into oblivion and she remained an enigma till her last, although thousands of fans had converged at the crematorium to catch one last glimpse of their idol. Her entire medical treatment had also been done in seclusion and secrecy.[41]
